ANNOUNCER
Previously on Live From Mount
Olympus...
CHAMBER GUARD
Who goes there?!
ARIADNE
It's me -- Icarus. I've come to
see the tributes.
ANT
Yo, don't sneak up on a guy like
that!
ARIADNE
I didn't mean to startle you.
ANT
I'm not startled, I'm just...
THESEUS
Hypervigilant!
ARIADNE
Theseus, come with me to the dream
chamber. It's where healing takes
place.
THESEUS
And I bet you would know --
Ariadne, snake-goddess-in-waiting!
ARIADNE
How did you -- ?!
THESEUS
Your beautiful eyes, your unique
way of moving through the world --
and your entirely unconvincing
'stache.
ARIADNE
Hey! Don't touch my 'stache!
THESEUS
But why have you risked so much to
find me?
ARIADNE
I must hear your answers to some
very important questions. I will
return to ask them tomorrow night.
THESEUS
Ariad -- I mean, Icarus!
ARIADNE
Do you miss me yet?
THESEUS
I think I'm gonna miss you too
much...

HERMES
Welcome back, my little heroes!
We jump right into our next
episode as the young Athenian
tributes return to their chambers
deep within the labyrinth. These
teenagers have the honor of being
chosen as sacrifices --
EROS
Mmmm, I don't think everyone would
consider being chosen as a
sacrifice an "honor," Hermes.
HERMES
Well, in Knossos, they treat their
sacrifices with tremendous honor --
EROS
Until they feed them to the
Minotaur...
HERMES
Eros -- These young Athenian
athletes have spent the evening as
honored guests at elegant banquets
hosted by the most prominent
families in Knossos. You know that
this city is quite cosmopolitan --
welcoming people from all over the
world. It's a city of such
complexity! Quite different from
Athens, which seems rather ...
quaint...in comparison.
The tributes are trying to make
sense of it all as they return to
their chambers...
4 INT. CHAMBERS, NIGHT. 4
B roll of excited chatter among all the
tributes except Theseus continues
underneath.
SIMON
On the banquet table, there was a
pitcher shaped like the head of a
bull! You grabbed it by the horns
and the wine poured right out of
its mouth!
PROKRITOS
I saw one like that -- To be
honest, it seemed a bit morbid...
IDAS
I could swear the bull was looking
right at me with its big red eyes.
They certainly do love bulls
here...
KORONIS
(quietly)
Can you believe they let kids our
age drink wine? I had my first
taste --
ERIBOEA
(wowed and shocked)
Really? You drank some??
LYSIDIKE
(laughing)
Eriboea, you didn't?
ERIBOEA
Of course not; my parents would
kill me!
LYSIDIKE
Well -- we're all going to be
eaten by the Minotaur in a couple
of days -- So why not have a
little fun first!
ERIBOEA
(fearfully)
Not funny!
LYSIDIKE
But true.
MENESTHO
So let's live it up now!
ERIBOEA
Can we change the subject, please?
PROKRITOS
The food was delicious -- but so
strange --
SIMON
Full of spices I'd never tasted
before...
PHAIDIMOS
The lady at my house told me her
cook uses
(sounding out the
names)
coriander, saffron, and turmeric!
She said they were from Egypt!
The tributes respond with wonder at this.
LYSIDIKE
The walls in the dining rooms were
covered in frescoes of dolphins
and fish -- I felt like I was
swimming with Poseidon!
ANT
I saw a fresco of three guys
dancing with an enormous bull --
one grabbing hold of its horns,
another doing a somersault over
its back, and the third with arms
outstretched. They looked like us
when I'm getting ready to catch
you, Phaidimos.
PROKRITOS
I got the sense in these families,
women run the show...
ANT
You gotta problem with that?
PROKRITOS
No, I um...
ANT
You 'um' what?
PROKRITOS
I thought it was kind of...well,
cool!
LYSIDIKE
The queen does seem to have a lot
of power, they kept talking about
her...
SIMON
Yeah, but I heard some juicy
gossip -- The king plans to put an
end to that!
ANT
What do you mean?
SIMON
Someone said King Minos ordered
Daedalus to design a temple for
the snake goddess to be built so
far up in the mountains no one
will ever be able to reach it --
PROKRITOS
I heard it's going to be a prison
for Queen Pasiphae!
ANT
What a fool -- Does Minos really
believe he can force out the snake
goddess and rule without her?
PHAIDIMOS
Well, his navy already controls
the sea...
LYSIDIKE
Hasn't the snake goddess been
worshipped in Knossos for
thousands of years?
ERIBOEA
Pasiphae is pretty scary with
those snakes -- Her daughter is
too!
MENESTHO
I heard someone say Minos plans to
marry Ariadne off to some foreign
prince and send her far away.
THESEUS
(sharply)
What?
MENESTHO
Yeah. The guys at my table said
everyone knows Minos wants to get
rid of her...
The following lines should be rapid and
jumbled on top of each other.
KORONIS
Theseus -- Weren't you at King
Minos's palace for dinner?
LYSIDIKE
Is he really trying to push the
women out?
IDAS
Is he really building a prison
temple?
ERIBOEA
Does he really hate the Snake
Goddess?
SIMON
(suspiciously)
Was Ariadne really there?
KORONIS
What was Ariadne wearing, Theseus?
ANT
(sternly)
Yeah, T, what was she wearing?
THESEUS
Enough with the fashion questions -
- it's getting late and we need to
get to sleep -- bull dance in the
morning!
ERIBOEA
(quickly)
Are we gonna be eaten by the
Minotaur?
Adlibs from the tributes: "Are we? I'm
scared. "I wanna go home? I don't like it
here!" I don't wanna die!" "I'm scared!"
THESEUS
We knew our mission on Crete would
be risky. Bull dancing is
dangerous, and the threat of the
Minotaur is real.
Worried B roll from tributes.
THESEUS
But we've trained for this moment,
each of us working smoothly and
confidently with everyone else to
create a spectacle that none of us
could create on our own.
ANT
When we focus, when we work
together as a team, we stay alive!
THESEUS
All of you focus on the bull dance
-- and I will deal with the
Minotaur. I have a plan. Are you
with me?
Adlibs of tributes: "Yes!!! We got this!!
We're Athenians!"
LYSIDIKE
We got this, we got this!
The noise of tributes talking trails off.
5 INT. CHAMBERS, NIGHT. 5
Sound of snoring.
ANT
(whispering)
Glad they're all finally asleep --
you gonna hit the hay, big T?
THESEUS
(whispering)
Not yet. But you go get some rest,
Ant.
Sound of footsteps.
ANT
Hey! Isn't that the dude from last
night?
THESEUS
(nonchalantly)
Yeah -- Hey, Icarus.
ARIADNE
(in low voice)
Hello, Theseus.
THESEUS
Don't you have someplace to be,
Ant?
ANT
It's cool! Happy to stay and talk
to "Icarus"!
THESEUS
You need to sleep -- Go join the
others.
ANT
Alright...but I'll be right over
there if you need me.
Sound of footsteps as Ant walks away.
Sound of footsteps of Ariadne and Theseus as
they walk to the dream chamber.
EROS
(v.o. from Godspod
studio)
Finally! Here we go!
APHRODITE
(whispering in
Godspod studio)
Eros, shush -- don't distract
them!
HERMES (V.O.)
Careful of your drool, little
Eros...
Footsteps end as Theseus and Ariadne sit
down in the dream chamber.
THESEUS
Girl, why do you have to be so
beautiful! It was all I could do
not to stare at you at dinner.
ARIADNE
I caught you looking my way more
than once. You need to get a game
face, Theseus! People are going to
notice!
THESEUS
Finally, a minute alone in your
dream chamber!
(picks up her hand)
Your hands... they're so soft...
BEAT
ARIADNE
Yours are warm...
Aphrodite love music here.
Quick intercut between this scene and the
podcast studio:
EROS
Come on... kiss....
ARIADNE
Mmm...
(catches herself)
Wait a minute! I came here for a
serious purpose!
EROS
NoOoOoOoO!
Eros's cry is so loud that... can Ariadne
and Theseus almost hear it?
THESEUS
Did you hear something?
ARIADNE
I don't think so... Anyway, no
more hand holding! I have
questions for you!
THESEUS
(laughing)
Ask away! And then we can get back
to hand holding?
ARIADNE
(smiling)
That all depends on your answers.
THESEUS
In that case -- What do you want
to know?
ARIADNE
If you're the son of the king of
Athens -- why are you a tribute?
Princes don't usually have to
sacrifice themselves.
THESEUS
Starting with the toughest
question, huh. You're good at this
hard-hitting interview stuff.
ARIADNE
Nice trying to distract me. Answer
the question, Theseus.
THESEUS
Well -- I'll have to go back a
ways -- I didn't always know I was
the son of Aegeus of Athens.
Growing up in Troizen, it was just
me and my mom.
ARIADNE
You don't have any siblings?
THESEUS
Nope. I used to be so jealous of
the other kids. The ones who had
sisters and brothers and a mom and
dad. You're lucky to have your
sister!
ARIADNE
I love her, or whatever, but she
can be a pain! And I have
brothers, too...a big complicated
family...
THESEUS
I just had my mom and my
grandfather -- and I always felt
like something was missing. I
spent a lot of time wondering who
my dad might be -- Did I look like
him? What was he like? Why did he
abandon me? The kids in Troizen
teased me...
ARIADNE
How dare they tease you!? Your
grandfather is king! My father
would have had them thrown to the
Minotaur!
THESEUS
King Pittheus isn't like your dad -
- I learned a lot from my Pappous
about how to rule with compassion
and justice. And how to deal with
rumors! He hinted that my father
is Poseidon. That shut everyone up
-- no one wants to cross a god!
ARIADNE
Do you think Poseidon is really
your father?
THESEUS
Maybe? Even when I badgered her,
Mom would never say. She's really
good at keeping secrets.
ARIADNE
A priestess has to learn early how
to keep secrets -- you know that.
THESEUS
Yeah. But keeping my own
beginnings from me? That hurt.
ARIADNE
Then how did you learn about King
Aegeus?
THESEUS
Well, as soon as I could walk, my
mom started taking me on
adventures in the woods, and every
spring we always seemed to end up
at a big rock deep in the
forest...
6 EXT. WOODS IN TROIZEN-DAY: FLASHBACK 6
Sound of Theseus (age 5 or 6) and his mother
Aethra (20's) walking through the deep
woods.
YOUNG THESEUS
Mom! Why do we have to go to that
stupid rock again?
AETHRA
Is that the way boys talk these
days? You're the grandson of a
king, Theseus -- watch your mouth!
YOUNG THESEUS
Sorry, Mom...
AETHRA
And trust me, it's not some stupid
rock. One day that rock will
change the direction of your life.
There's a surprise for you
underneath...
YOUNG THESEUS
Who puts a surprise for a kid
underneath a huge heavy rock?
Isn't that kind of stupi-- I mean,
strange?
AETHRA
Well, fate works in mysterious
ways, my darling.
YOUNG THESEUS
What's fate, mom?
AETHRA
Fate is all that will happen --
all that is meant to be.
YOUNG THESEUS
Like the... sunrise?
AETHRA
(chuckling)
Kind of, but not exactly. You'll
understand more when you are
older. Ah! Here's the rock! Push
it, Theseus -- push!
YOUNG THESEUS
(sound of effort) )
I think I'm moving it, Mom! Is it
moving? Is it?
AETHRA
One day, but not today -- my
little hero.
7 INTERIOR, DREAM CHAMBER, NIGHT 7
ARIADNE
"Little hero," huh?
THESEUS
(a little
embarrassed)
Yeah...moms, right?
ARIADNE
As you got older, did you begin to
understand your fate?
THESEUS
I started to have glimmers -- I
could feel that my fate was to
lead me beyond Troizen. That
perhaps, if my father really was
Poseidon, I could follow in the
footsteps of my cousin Heracles...
ARIADNE
And become a real hero?
THESEUS
That was the dream! Every spring,
when Mom would drag me to the
rock, I pushed and pushed and
pushed, but that boulder would
never budge. And then, last year,
I realized that this was not a
test of strength -- but of
strategy...
8 EXT. TROIZEN, DAY: FLASHBACK 8
Sound of Theseus and his mother Aethra's
footsteps in the deep woods. Theseus is now
15 years old, his mother is in her early
30's.
THESEUS
I know the way Mom, I know the
way.
AETHRA
Alright.
THESEUS
We've been coming here for 15
years at this point.
AETHRA
That's true.
THESEUS
You know what? This time, I can't
wait -- I can't wait to get to
that stupid rock --
AETHRA
Trust me, it's not some stupid
rock. One day that rock will
change the direction of your life.
THESEUS
Yeah yeah yeah, you say that every
year, Mom.
AETHRA
Well, maybe this is the year --
Last year you almost budged it...
THESEUS
You always say that too. But this
year I have a plan...
AETHRA
A plan! You are growing up! Does
it have anything to do with that
big pack you're carrying?
THESEUS
You'll see! Hey -- there's the
boulder!
Theseus begins to run.
AETHRA
Theseus, wait for me.
Sound of woman running.
THESEUS
OK --
(empties out pack on
the ground)
Let me get this set up.
AETHRA
Interesting collection of --
branches and rocks?
THESEUS
This branch will work as the
lever, and this stone will be the
fulcrum, I'll apply the effort
here...
AETHRA
You do have a strategy!
THESEUS
Of course I do -- I'm no longer a
little kid, Mom! But you need to
move -- you're right in the path
of the boulder! Go stand over
there, uphill!
AETHRA
Alright, Archimedes...
THESEUS
(to himself)
Give me a lever long enough, and a
fulcrum on which to place it, and
I shall move the world.
(out loud)
OK, fulcrum is secured, lever is
well under the boulder -- here we
go!
Theseus makes a sound of huge effort and
then we hear the creaking of the lever and
the boulder lifts and rolls down the hill...
AETHRA
It's -- it's moving Theseus! You
did it!
THESEUS
(a little
disappointed)
But all that's underneath is...a
pair of moldy old sandals? That's
it?!
AETHRA
Keep digging, kiddo.
THESEUS
Mom, I'm not a kiddo, I'm a
teenager...o.
(digs and hits
something metal,
which sings out)
Whoa! It looks like a sword? It is
a sword, in a scabbard covered
with jewels?!
(a little in awe)
It's beautiful! And fits my hand
perfectly!
Sound as sword cuts through the air as
Theseus waves it around, perhaps he cuts a
branch off and it falls to the forest floor.
AETHRA
(laughing)
Watch it there, mighty swordsman --
you'll cut the whole forest down!
THESEUS
I can't believe how sharp this
thing is -- How long has it been
under that rock?
AETHRA
(serious now)
Since before you were born. Your
father buried that sword.
THESEUS
Wow, Poseidon did this for me???
AETHRA
(Deep breath)
It's finally time for us to talk
about your origins, Theseus. Your
father is -- King Aegeus of
Athens, or...
YOUNG THESEUS
What? King Aegeus of Athens? Then
why does Pappou always say...
AETHRA
The same night that I met King
Aegeus, I also, um, spent time
with Poseidon, and...
THESEUS
Ick, MOM! TMI!
AETHRA
Though the important thing is that
Aegeus, well, Aegeus hoped I would
have a son --
THESEUS
Then why didn't he ever come back
to find out? It's been 15 years!
And why did you wait so long to
tell me???
AETHRA
Aegeus asked me to wait and see if
you were strong enough -- and
smart enough -- to move this rock.
Only then could I tell you who he
was --
THESEUS
You kept this from me for my whole
life!!!
AETHRA
Theseus --
THESEUS
All those years of... of not
knowing, of wondering who he was,
why he left me...
BEAT
THESEUS
Wait, my father is the king of
Athens? Really?
AETHRA
Well, your father could be the
king of Athens, or maybe the great
god Poseidon...
THESEUS
Mom! I'm even more confused now --
What does this make me?
AETHRA
You'll always be my little hero...
THESEUS
Ugh!
9 INT. CHAMBERS, NIGHT. 9
ARIADNE
One dad is bad enough -- but you
may actually have two!
THESEUS
It does give me options -- On some
days I can be the son of Poseidon,
great god of the sea, and on
others I'm the son of the king of
Athens! Kind of like a "choose
your own dad adventure" sort of
thing...
ARIADNE
Either way, you certainly didn't
have to become a tribute, you
could have stayed safe in Athens --
THESEUS
(chuckling
sarcastically)
Safe? Athens was definitely not
safe when I arrived. Aegeus was
not thrilled to see me.
ARIADNE
That makes no sense -- Why
wouldn't he want to meet his long-
lost son?
THESEUS
Well... I decided not to tell
anyone who I was. I wanted it to
be a big surprise for him.
ARIADNE
Oh boy. Kings do NOT like
surprises...
THESEUS
Yeah, I found that out quick. But
I had just rid the countryside of
all these bandits and murderers
and I kind of got caught up in the
hype. The labors of Theseus, they
called it --
ARIADNE
(skeptical)
Like the labors of Heracles?
Really?
THESEUS
The Athenians loved me!
ARIADNE
And you let that go to your head.
Huh. You know it's never wise to
let popular opinion sway you...it
can change in an instant.
THESEUS
And it can lead to jealousy. My
father's wife told Aegeus that the
people loved me more than they
loved him, that I would overthrow
him...
ARIADNE
Sounds like a lovely person...
THESEUS
Dad's wife? She was Medea.
ARIADNE
Oh...
THESEUS
She concocted a plan and convinced
my dad to throw a huge banquet for
me, where she would put poison in
my wine cup and have my Dad hand
it to me...
ARIADNE
No!!!!
BEAT
ARIADNE
Theseus! Tell me! What happened
next???
THESEUS
Sorry -- when you grabbed my hands
just now, I totally forgot what I
was saying -- It feels like sparks
are flowing through me...
ARIADNE
You just told me that Aegeus and
Medea were planning to poison you!
THESEUS
Oh, right -- Well, as I lifted my
goblet to give a toast, my chiton
shifted and revealed my sword --
Aegeus saw it, realized who I was,
and knocked the wine from my hand
just as I raised the cup to my
lips...
ARIADNE
Amazing...
THESEUS
I do love holding your hands...
ARIADNE
But you still haven't answered my
question -- Why are you here?
THESEUS
When Aegeus claimed me as his son
and heir, the people of Athens
rejoiced! There were banquets and
parties and celebrations that
lasted for weeks! But then your
father's minions arrived,
demanding new tributes. Happiness
turned to despair, everywhere I
went I saw parents weeping, hiding
their sons and daughters away. My
father was in despair, too, he
believed there was nothing he
could do to save his people except
give in again to this terrible
retribution that Minos demanded --
ARIADNE
Because the Marathon bull killed
my brother Androgeus...
THESEUS
Yes. So I told Aegeus I would go.
How could I let others pay this
terrible price if I wasn't willing
to risk everything too?
ARIADNE
How did your father react?
THESEUS
He argued and pleaded for me to
stay, but I was determined. I rode
through the city and countryside,
looking for young people with the
grace of dancers and the
fortitude of athletes --
ARIADNE
Wait -- you chose the tributes? No
wonder they've lasted longer than
any others.
THESEUS
We practiced every day with the
biggest bulls we could find,
leaping, dancing, becoming a team.
It's like I have 13 brothers and
sisters now.
ARIADNE
A nice big ol' family! But how did
you ever convince your father to
let you go?
THESEUS
I promised him I would return,
with all of the tributes, safe.
ARIADNE
Quite a promise.
THESEUS
As we boarded the ship with black
sails, he gave me a set of white
ones to hoist if I... when I
returned.
He said he would stand in the
Temple of Poseidon on the cliffs
above the sea to watch for the
ship with white sails, day after
day after day...
ARIADNE
He loves you.
THESEUS
He does. And I love you, Ariadne.
ARIADNE
Oh Theseus...
(composing herself)
I have more I need to discuss with
you, but it must wait. You need to
get some sleep before tomorrow's
bull dance...
THESEUS
One more thing before you go.
Sound of a soft smooch.
And, back in the podcast studio...
EROS
YEeSSsSsS!!
It echoes through the dream chamber.
ARIADNE
Okay, that I heard.
THESEUS
(giddily)
Good night, Ariadne.
ARIADNE
Goodnight, Theseus.
Sound of Ariadne running off.
THESEUS
YEeSSsSsS!!
10 INT. GODSPOD STUDIO 10
EROS
They kissed! Finally!!!
HERMES
Eros, do you ever pay attention
past the first kiss?
EROS
Why bother? I have so many more
sparks to ignite and arrows to
shoot, and it's clear that with
that kiss, Theseus and Ariadne's
love will endure!
HERMES
Ah...We'll just have to see --
next time, on Live From Mount
Olympus.
